I love tartan, but there’s one autumnal pattern I have an even softer spot for: argyle. You know the one – the diamond motif beloved by golfers and your grandad, usually found on jumpers and sweater vests. Of course, with such a classic pattern, it’s hard to imagine there’s much room for improvement. But, I’ve recently discovered a new take on the style that seriously elevates the borrowed from the boys staple.
Typically crafted from classic wool for warmth and a polished finish, the argyle knit has had a rather fuzzy update. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have noticed that fluffy knits made from mohair, cashmere or brushed wool have been popping up everywhere, from luxury brands (Bella Freud is particularly partial to a fluffy jumper) to high street favourites.
Speaking of high street favourites, it’s unsurprisingly M&S that has nailed the fluffy take on the classic knit – as proven by its Brushed Argyle Knitted Vest.
Crafted from – you guessed it – a fluffy mohair blend fabric, the M&S’s sweater vest is the perfect contemporary take on the preppy staple that works with plenty of your core wardrobe pieces. Wear it on its own with your favourite skirt as pictured above, with a pair of chic leather boots and silver or gold jewellery.
Alternatively, layering is a great choice when it comes to this piece. Think white shirts underneath with the buttons opened at the collar, or a floaty blouse in the same crisp colour and cotton fabric. As for bottoms, jeans would look endlessly chic, or alternatively, choose a pair of tailored chinos for a classic golfer touch.
Of course, it makes sense that this style is so popular, especially since the consistent popularity on the runway. From Burberry to Prada, Max Mara and Miu Miu (Prada’s little sister brand) M&S’s style looks like a designer version. So much so, that I think it’ll sell out at record speed – so be quick.
