[Financial News] Shinhan Securities is expanding its voice phishing prevention network by using mobile phone activation records to detect financial fraud.
The measure is intended to proactively screen out types of fraud that were difficult to detect using existing abnormal financial transaction detection systems. The company also plans to introduce a call-pattern analysis service using artificial intelligence (AI), further strengthening its financial consumer protection framework.
Shinhan Securities said on the 5th that, marking the first anniversary of its “Mobile Phone Activation History Check Service,” the first of its kind in the securities industry, it is continuing to strengthen its financial fraud prevention system.
The service was introduced at the end of October last year. It was introduced in response to a rise in cases, as voice phishing crimes have become more sophisticated, in which scammers persuade victims to activate additional mobile phones or secretly open phone lines in victims’ names using leaked personal information.
When a customer suspected of being a voice phishing victim attempts to withdraw a large sum, the system additionally checks whether a mobile phone has been activated recently. Previously, when customers themselves were deceived by scammers and carried out legitimate financial transactions, ordinary suspicious transaction detection systems alone had difficulty identifying warning signs.
Shinhan Securities addressed these blind spots in detection by using mobile phone activation records as an additional indicator in its assessment.
The dedicated financial fraud response team is also continuing to achieve results in prevention. Shinhan Securities’ Consumer Support Department detects an average of about 1,800 abnormal transactions per quarter through monitoring. The customer assets protected through these efforts amount to about 230 million won.
In particular, since 2025, the company has also made progress in proactively preventing further financial fraud losses among customers who were tricked by scammers into providing personal information, such as copies of their IDs.
Shinhan Securities is continuing to enhance its abnormal financial transaction detection system (FDS) while also pursuing the introduction of technology to counter new financial fraud methods. In 2027, it plans to introduce an “AI Call Pattern Analysis Service for Voice Phishing,” which will analyze call patterns between customers and scammers, to strengthen its ability to detect financial fraud.
Gu Jae-cheon, head of Shinhan Securities’ Consumer Protection Division, said, “As financial fraud methods become increasingly sophisticated, prevention systems must continue to evolve. We will continue to do our utmost to protect customer assets through differentiated prevention services and enhancements to our abnormal financial transaction detection system.”[email protected] Kang Jung-mo Reporter
