Milan fumbled the lead with an Alphadjo Cisse brace, as Samuel Mbangula’s hat-trick gave Bologna a surprise victory, inflicting the first Serie A defeat for Ruben Amorim.

The injury crisis just kept getting worse, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek joining Adrien Rabiot, Diego Moreira, Samuel Chukwueze, Mario Gila, Matteo Gabbia, Alexis Saelemaekers and Pietro Terracciano on the absentee list. With the Derby della Madonnina coming up on Saturday, Alphadjo Cisse and Yunus Musah allowed Christian Pulisic and Luka Modric to rest.

Bologna won their last two away fixtures at Lecce and Cagliari, but were still missing Riccardo Orsolini, Roberto Piccoli, Emil Holm, Jay Enem and Lorenzo De Silvestri.

Bologna had the first real chance when Nadir Zortea flashed the ball across the face of goal from the right, but just beyond Jens Odgaard sliding into the six-yard box.

It was only a warning, as Yunus Musah was robbed in midfield and Zortea again pulled back from the right by-line, this time Samuel Mbangula was ready to sweep in undisturbed from nine yards.

However, Bologna were punished for an even more catastrophic error playing out from the back for the equaliser. Arthur Theate was caught napping not once, but twice in the same move, rolling across for Cisse to sweep in from close range.

The Rossoneri were having huge problems defending down their left flank, as Federico Bernardeschi got there too and pulled back to trouble the defence.

Instead, Milan turned the game around with Hutchinson blocked off after a strong solo run, Fikayo Tomori firing the loose ball across from the right and Cisse was again ready to meet it from close range with an acrobatic volley.

Tomori had an injury just before half-time and was replaced during the break by Modric, dropping Musah into the right-back role.

Federico Bernardeschi won the ball back in midfield and swung it in for Odgaard, who couldn’t keep the finish down from five yards as he came sliding in.

However, Milan imploded in the space of a couple of minutes. First Davide Bartesaghi accidentally bundled a Juan Miranda free kick into his own net at the back post.

Moments later, Miranda was decisive again, getting down the left and pulling back for Mbangula, whose excellent first touch allowed him to get away from two, turning in from close range to put Bologna in front.

Niccolò Cambiaghi fired just wide after Milan struggled to play out from the back, Martin Vitik robbing Goncalo Ramos, but Francesco Camarda was millimetres away from an equaliser when his glancing header shaved a coat of paint off the far post.

Bologna added a fourth and Mbangula completed his hat-trick when Camarda was crowded out in midfield, Odgaard was sent down the right and rolled across for the ex-Juventus man, who stayed behind the line of the ball to avoid wandering offside.

Christian Pulisic’s diving header was acrobatically fingertipped out from under the bar by Lukasz Skorupski.
