KT will restrict subscriptions for LTE devices that do not support 3G and HD Voice, and will support existing customers switching to LTE and 5G. It will offer free device replacements and rate discounts, and will also provide subsidies to customers who cancel or move to another carrier.
KT said that starting on the 2nd it will halt new subscriptions, number portability, and device changes for the affected devices. Cases where the device is changed by swapping the USIM are also included. The move is due to declining users and aging equipment, and the company plans to review ending 3G service in the future, considering protection of existing customers and the transition situation.
Those eligible are customers using the affected devices as of 12 a.m. that day. If they switch for free to one of three designated LTE or 5G devices, they will also receive a monthly 12,000 won discount for 24 months.
If customers purchase a device directly, for phones they will receive a 150,000 won device-change point and 12,000 won per month, and for smart devices they will receive a 75,000 won point and 6,000 won per month. The discount period is 24 months and is applied together with the common subsidy.
Customers can also choose only the rate discount. For 24 months, phones get 14,000 won off per month, and smart devices get 7,000 won off per month, and the optional contract discount also applies in combination.
If they cancel or move to another carrier, they will receive 40,000 won per phone line and 20,000 won per smart device line. Penalties due to switching, canceling, or moving to another carrier will also be waived.
KT plans to inform customers of how to apply via text and its website and app, and to provide separate guidance for older adults. Details are available at the customer center and on KT.com.
