(WJAR) — A new app created by a Swansea man aims to help people connect while they’re out at bars and restaurants.
Jonathan Carreiro created Speakeazy after noticing what he describes as less face-to-face interaction in nightlife settings. The app lets users join chatrooms tied to specific venues, where they can ask questions, share recommendations or see if anyone wants to talk.

“Facebook, Instagram, Meta: they have kind of done damage to our social norms as far as in-person communication goes,” Carreiro said. “And I think Speakeazy starts to reverse that damage.”
Users can also check a venue’s crowd gender ratio before heading out and post videos showing the music or atmosphere once they arrive.
Speakeazy is currently available in New England, and Carreiro hopes to expand it nationwide. He says the app is available in the App Store and is among the first apps compatible with the new iPhone Duo.
