KT has entered the process of ending its 3G (third-generation mobile communication) service, following SK Telecom. Starting on the 2nd, KT will halt new 3G signups and support the transition of existing users to LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and 5G (fifth-generation mobile communication). This means both telecom operators running 3G networks in South Korea have initiated preliminary procedures for service termination.
KT announced that it would stop new signups, number porting, and device changes for 3G devices and LTE devices that do not support HD Voice (LTE-based voice calls) starting today. This includes USIM (SIM card) replacements. LTE devices that do not support HD Voice use the 3G network for voice calls, so they will be unable to make calls once the 3G service is terminated in the future.
Previously, SK Telecom halted new 3G signups on August 20 and is advancing related procedures with a goal of ending the service by the end of 2027. However, the actual termination date will be finalized after approval from the Ministry of Science and ICT. KT also plans to consider future service termination while taking into account factors such as the transition status of existing customers to LTE and 5G.
Domestic 3G services began to spread widely after SK Telecom and KT commercialized them in 2003. In 2007, KT introduced the ‘SHOW’ brand and moved to expand the video calling and mobile internet markets. However, as LTE and 5G became widespread, the number of subscribers dropped sharply, and equipment aging progressed.
As of March this year, 3G subscribers numbered approximately 150,000 for SK Telecom and approximately 68,000 for KT, accounting for just 0.7% and 0.5% of their total subscriber bases, respectively. LG Uplus did not introduce a 3G service and transitioned directly from 2G to LTE.
KT will support existing users with device replacements and rate discounts. The target customers are those using 3G devices or LTE devices that do not support HD Voice as of 0:00 on November 2. Eligible recipients can choose one of three compensation options. If they replace their device for free with one of three designated LTE or 5G devices, they will receive a monthly rate discount of 12,000 won for 24 months. If they purchase a desired device directly, they will be provided with 150,000 won in device change points (based on mobile phones) and a monthly rate discount of 12,000 won. If they choose only a rate discount without device replacement support, they can receive a monthly discount of 14,000 won for 24 months.
Customers who cancel their service or move to another telecom operator will be paid a cancellation support fee of 40,000 won per mobile phone line. Early termination fees incurred during the transition, cancellation, and number porting processes will also be waived.
KT plans to inform users about the transition support through text messages, its homepage, apps, etc., and will provide separate guidance for elderly customers.
Kim Young-gyeol, Senior Executive Vice President of the Customer Business Division at KT’s Customer Segment, said, “We will carefully support customers to minimize inconvenience and burden for 3G users and allow them to make choices suited to their situations.” He added, “Going forward, we will continue to advance network sophistication and improve service quality to provide more stable and convenient communication services.”
