Kerala Police have reportedly recovered explicit video footage involving around 12 women from the mobile phone of a doctor accused of sexually assaulting a 50-year-old woman in Kochi, adding a new dimension to the case.

Investigators suspect that the doctor had recorded private moments involving the women and stored the footage on his device.

The accused, Dr Johnson K Varghese, 41, is absconding, and the Infopark police have intensified efforts to trace him. Steps are also being taken to issue a lookout notice to prevent him from leaving the country.

According to investigators, the videos were found during the forensic examination of the doctor’s mobile phone. Police said further cases could be registered if any of the women concerned come forward with complaints.

The rape case has taken a significant turn amid an ongoing controversy involving an alleged attack and robbery at a Kochi flat in which a young actress, Athulya Chandra, and actor Bibin Perumpilly were among those implicated.

A group of 12 people had allegedly assaulted the doctor, who claimed they had taken away valuables, including mobile phones, worth around Rs 3.25 lakh.

The sexual assault complaint against the doctor was lodged by a 50-year-old woman who is a relative of one of the accused in the flat assault case. The complaint was filed shortly after the doctor approached the police with allegations that he had been assaulted and threatened.

According to the woman’s complaint, the doctor picked her up in his car near a private hotel in the Infopark area around 7.30 pm on October 10. He allegedly took her to a nearby bar, made her consume alcohol until she was incapacitated and later sexually assaulted her in a hotel room. The woman had previously consulted him for medical treatment.

The police registered a case against the doctor following her complaint. Investigators are now examining the recovered footage as part of the probe, while efforts to locate the absconding accused are continuing.
