Quick Read

  • AMD plunges 13% days after its record quarter as fears of Democratic AI regulation and slower data center buildouts overpower earnings.

  • Lisa Su now expects AMD revenue to grow more than 80% in 2027, insisting demand outstrips supply despite the selloff.

  • Broadcom falls 6% and Intel 8% as the chip rout spreads, leaving rich valuations little cushion if Washington curbs AI spending.

Political risk is outweighing strong earnings across the AI chip trade, and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) is taking the hardest hit. AMD stock is at $424.36, down 13% in morning trading. The slide comes days after the chipmaker reported a quarter that CEO Lisa Su said “was the largest and most profitable in our history.”

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock is at $186.81, down 7%. Chipmakers are extending their selloff on fears that a Democratic-controlled Congress and Democratic state officials could tighten AI rules and slow data center construction. Across the group, semiconductor stocks are also extending declines after quarterly results from other chipmakers.

Midterm Results Put AI Rules Back in Play

Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, and traders are pricing in a tougher policy backdrop for AI. Rep. Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat, called on November 4 for a pause on advanced AI development until adequate regulations are in place. For AMD and NVIDIA, that rhetoric raises the prospect of slower data center buildouts just as both companies ramp new systems.

State-level pressure adds another layer of risk for AMD’s customers. A Colorado legislative staff report noted that states have enacted “a variety of legislation and executive orders around data centers,” with concerns covering energy use, water and electricity costs.
