A influencer from central China has made a hoverboard where people can board.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on the 28th, Song Xingyu (26) from Uns, Hubei Province, is famous for his nickname ‘Amazing Ayew’ online. He has gained more than 3 million followers by sharing videos of aerial vehicles he invented on social media.
On the 15th, Song heated up the Internet by releasing a video of himself flying over the mountains and the Yangtze River on a hoverboard he made for about two months. In particular, this is also the day Tesla first introduced its airborne roadster in the United States. Chinese experts were quick to compare the two innovative technologies. “Tesla probably made a huge flying toy for show, but we can actually fly,” one commenter said.
Growing up in the countryside, Song quit school at the age of 14 and worked at his father’s timber shop. He also built the first model plane by collecting waste materials from aviation enthusiasts. In June 2022, the abandoned warehouse was converted into a private laboratory with loans, but the process was not smooth. After being scammed, Song was in debt of 2.4 million yuan (about 480 million won). However, an IT company was able to overcome the crisis by investing 1.8 million yuan.
In May 2024, he built a remote controlled plane for 22 days and then tried to launch it into the upper atmosphere using helium balloons, but strong winds destroyed his campsite and launch equipment. Six months later, he jumped from an altitude of 5000m in a helicopter, wearing a homemade jet-propelled flying device. The main parachute did not open, and the auxiliary parachute only opened 600 meters above the ground. At that time, he thought he would die like this and recorded his last will. Despite this crisis, his love for flying was not over.
This year, Song began recreating Goblin’s glider inspired by Spider-Man. The first version, powered by an ultra-small turbojet engine, caught fire during the test and switched to an electric propulsion system. He eventually built an AI-controlled hoverboard capable of carrying four adults and succeeded in a historic test flight during the Chinese National Day holiday. As a result, after gliding through the Yangtze River, mountain peaks, and city streets, he landed safely in a canyon.
Mr. Song said, “I started with nothing, so what is the reason to be afraid of failure. It’s the best option to be brave and move forward,” he said. His video received more than 5.1 million “likes.” Netizens praised the video, such as “I thought it was made with artificial intelligence,” “It’s really amazing,” and “I respect the spirit of challenge.”
