BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said that for the 2028 edition of the Women’s Premier League, the board would have to have some brainstorming sessions to increase the number of teams, as well as in other areas where it can improve, with the fifth edition of the tournament to begin in three months.
The Women’s Premier League has had five teams since its inception in 2023.
Of the 150 players who registered for Wednesday’s WPL 2027 auction, just 25-27 slots were available across the five teams, underlining the depth of untapped domestic talent.
“From next year, we will definitely have to do some brainstorming sessions to increase the number of teams, as well as in other areas where we can improve. Not only the players, but so many other areas we are having involvement in, right from the coaches, selectors, etc and various stakeholders are involved here,” Saikia said while speaking to the WPL website.
The secretary added that the WPL has made significant strides in its four years, emerging as a dominant force in women’s cricket.
“WPL is one of the big leagues in franchise cricket after IPL. We have come a long way in four years and ultimately we are now dominating women’s cricket. WPL has contributed to the success of women’s cricket in India,” Saikia said.
WPL 2027 Auction Highlights
Australia skipper Sophie Molineux was the most expensive cricketer at Wednesday’s Women’s Premier League auction in Kochi, with UP Warriorz bagging her services for Rs 1.1 crore.
UP Warriorz also recruited India all-rounder Sneh Rana for Rs 30 lakh.
Delhi Capitals bagged hard-hitting batter Kiran Navgire for Rs 75 lakh, beating out two-time WPL champions Mumbai Indians.
UP Warriorz, who lacked a specialist wicketkeeper last season, addressed the gap by signing former India wicketkeeper-batter Sushma Verma for Rs 30 lakh.
The Warriorz have emerged with a spin-heavy attack ahead of WPL 2027, given they already have India’s Deepti Sharma and England’s Sophie Ecclestone in their ranks.
