Why Super Micro (SMCI) Stock Is Nosediving

What Happened?

Shares of server solutions provider Super Micro (NASDAQ:SMCI) fell 5.5% in the afternoon session after reports indicated that a former contractor admitted to conspiring with a company co-founder to illegally export restricted artificial intelligence technology to China. According to Tipranks, contractor Ting-Wei Sun pleaded guilty Thursday in Manhattan federal court to four counts, including conspiracies to break export rules, smuggle goods, defraud the United States, and obstruct justice. Prosecutors charged him in March, along with co-founder Yih-Shyan Liaw and a Taiwan sales manager, with a scheme that began around October 2023 to send about $2.5 billion of U.S. artificial-intelligence servers to China without licenses. The indictment covers servers built with Nvidia’s B200, H100, and H200 chips. Bloomberg reported that Liaw has pleaded not guilty. According to TipRanks, the shares are also still working through a $7 billion equity offering, and the drop lined up with wider selling in artificial-intelligence stocks after questions about OpenAI’s revenue figures.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Super Micro’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 66 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 10 days ago when the stock gained 4.3% on the news that the company began shipping server racks built for NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin AI architecture, according to TipRanks. The start of shipments reinforces SMCI’s role in the AI infrastructure supply chain. Vera Rubin–ready racks house and interconnect high-density systems that data centers need for advanced AI workloads, keeping the stock in the AI server buildout story.

Super Micro is up 26.9% since the beginning of the year, but at $39.30 per share, it is still trading 28.6% below its 52-week high of $55.04 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Super Micro’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $10,952.
