US President Donald Trump says Washington has a broad framework for a potential new trade agreement with Canada after recent discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney but offers few details on the proposed deal.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (November 1) said his administration has a “concept” for a new trade agreement with Canada, signalling the possibility of a fresh push to reset trade relations between the two neighbouring economies.

Speaking to reporters after arriving in Dubuque, Iowa, Trump said he had spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about trade in recent days. He indicated that the two sides had discussed the broad contours of a potential agreement but stopped short of providing details.

“We have the concept of a deal,” Trump said, without elaborating on what the proposed arrangement would involve.

The remarks come amid continuing efforts by Washington and Ottawa to navigate trade differences and maintain economic ties between two of North America’s largest trading partners.

However, Trump’s comments do not necessarily indicate that a formal agreement is imminent. The US president did not disclose whether negotiations had reached an advanced stage, what sectors could be covered or whether the proposed arrangement would involve changes to existing trade provisions.

The comments could nevertheless signal an opening for renewed engagement between the two governments, particularly as businesses on both sides of the border seek greater clarity over the future of trade relations.

The United States and Canada have closely interconnected economies, with cross-border trade playing a significant role in manufacturing, energy, automobiles and agricultural supply chains.

Any changes to the bilateral trade framework could therefore have implications extending beyond the two countries, particularly for businesses operating across North American supply chains.

For now, however, the proposed agreement remains at the level of a broad concept, with neither specific terms nor a timeline made public by Trump.
