The story of a high school girl who gave up college to take care of her seriously ill mother in China and her classmates who donated precious collections to help her became a hot topic.

According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 3rd, Cha Feng, a high school senior in Anhui Province, China, decided to give up college to take care of his mother, who was recently admitted to a hospital in Shanghai. Qiao’s mother, Tsuiping, 47, suffers from systemic severe work history and thymic tumors, a chronic muscle weakness disease. He was recently admitted to the intensive care unit with respiratory failure.

Qiao’s father cares for his wife two hours a day, and drives a car-sharing service for 12 hours, even though he also has a tumor. The cost of admission to the intensive care unit is 10,000 yuan (about 2 million won) per day alone.

Chao, the youngest of five siblings, wanted to help her family. Unable to make money like the rest of his family, he decided to repay his family by taking care of his mother. Qiao said her sister, who goes to graduate school, also considered quitting her studies and getting a job.

Chao told his homeroom teacher about his decision. In response, the homeroom teacher stopped Chao by encouraging him to continue studying because he always had excellent academic performance and received scholarships every year. But Chao made up his mind. Alumni who learned of Chao’s situation volunteered to donate goods for charity sale.

One of Chao’s best friends handed him a bag of money and explained, “The money is from selling game accounts.” Others donated Ultraman cards, favorite live-action drama-related merchandise, handicrafts, badges with favorite characters on them, records of favorite singers, and uniforms of favorite basketball players.

Videos of students donating their prized collections and saying goodbye to Qiao have touched the hearts of millions online. The video received more than 10 million “likes” and more than 200,000 comments.

Netizens hoped Chao would continue his studies. To this end, numerous netizens donated money. The homeroom teacher also handed Chao money donated by school staff. The school said it will support Chao to take the upcoming college entrance examination (Gaocao), allowing him to enter the university, and will exempt him from tuition fees when he returns to school.

Chao, who is currently taking care of her mother in Shanghai, thanked her classmates and teachers for supporting her. He promised that he would resume his studies as soon as the situation allowed him to and take the college entrance exam (Gaokao).
