The American Premier League owners that donate to Trump and Republicans ahead of U.S. midterms

Each year more and more Premier League clubs are being taken over, or at least heavily invested by American business moguls. These owners don’t just like to splash their cash in the transfer market, they also enjoy dabbling in political donations.

Glazer’s Trump contribution

Some of these owners are among the leading donors for their respective political parties. That’s the case with Edward Glazer. The Manchester United director has been listed as the top donor to President Donald Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections. Glazer’s family are the majority owners of the Red Devils and during this calendar year he has donated over $220,000.

The funds came out of his other team, stateside, the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Glazer is said to have donated four payments of $36,917 in February, March, April and June and one for just over $7,000 in in the summer. While he is the leading political donor in the Premier League he isn’t the only one.

Josh Harris is one of the co-owners of Crystal Palace and has also donated to the Republican Party, but a different one. He has committed $250,000 to SLF PAC, a independent Republican lobby group through his Apollo Global Management firm. His partner David Blitzer, who owns a stake in the NFL’s Washington Commanders has donated over $60,000 to Democratic candidates for Congress and the House of Representatives.

Khan, Kroenke bow out

AFC Bournemouth owner Bill Foley doesn’t have any party commitments. Instead he has invested over $200,000 to a variety of party representatives through his Black Knight consortium. One of the biggest beneficiaries of those donations is Leadership in America, which is a group that backs Republican Aaron Flint.

Newly promoted Ipswich investor, Marc Larry donated $7,300 to the Democrats this year, while Aston Villa’s owner Wes Edens has pledged $5,000 to Republican Mike Crapo.

Not all of the American based owners have not been as keen to donate chunks of cash to political parties this time around. Fulham’s Shahid Khan, who also owns the Jacksonville Jaguars, has not given any money to either political party, nor has Arsenal’s Stan Kroenke. The midterm elections are set for Tuesday and Trump’s Republican Party are looking to keep their three seat lead in the Senate. If the Democrats were to win they would need to win by four seats to take back the Senate. Time will tell how these donations play out in the voting polls this week.
