President Donald Trump is continuing to play the name game, this time setting his sights on one of the world’s largest bodies of water.

Speaking at a rally in South Carolina on Wednesday, October 21, Trump, 80, said he considered renaming the Atlantic Ocean after himself or America and contacted Google CEO Sundar Pichai about changing its name on Google Maps, according to The Guardian, which reported on the remarks Thursday, October 22.

“I only like two oceans: the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. I’m not going to put either Trump or America on any other ocean but these two,” Trump told the crowd, the outlet reported.

The president explained that he had considered the Atlantic Ocean after successfully pushing to rename other bodies of water.

“So we seriously looked at the Atlantic Ocean, and I called Google Maps, who were really great with the lake,” he said. “They’re still rattled from the Gulf. I said: ‘Sundar, I’m thinking of the Atlantic Ocean.'”

According to Trump, Pichai, 54, rejected the suggestion.

“No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it … Oceans are different, sir. They cover … a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that,” Trump said, describing the Google executive’s response, per the report.

“So I’ll probably pass. Should I pass it?” he asked the crowd, adding, “I think let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean.”

The proposal follows Trump’s previous efforts to rename major bodies of water.

In January 2025, Trump signed an executive order changing the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America for U.S. federal government use. He later pushed to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America amid trade tensions with Canada.

Google Maps adopted the new names for users in the United States, while users in Mexico and Canada continued seeing the original names.

Trump also floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself in September, suggesting the name “Trump Strait” in a Truth Social post.

As Globe previously reported, Trump also called for New Mexico to change its name to “New America,” claiming the move would boost property values and incomes. “We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” he wrote on Truth Social.
