Dexter star Michael C. Hall spoke with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese about the second season of the latest Dexter TV show. Hall discussed keeping the character feeling fresh and what’s new about Dexter this season. Dexter: Resurrection premieres globally on Paramount+ only with the Premium Plan on Friday, October 30.
“The second season of Dexter: Resurrection finds Dexter Morgan (Hall) caught between two killers — one with decades of notoriety and a lifetime of kills behind him, and the other a fresh young face terrorizing New York in ways no one has ever seen. Meanwhile, Dexter battles a new and unexpected enemy: a mid-life crisis. Harrison (Jack Alcott) continues his own pursuit of justice as father and son face their darkest chapter yet,” says the official synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Michael, this season starts with Dexter being haunted by the death of Angel. We’ve seen this character constantly change and evolve over the years, which is really remarkable. How has it been staying engaged with the role and really leaning into these small developments so you don’t become static as a performer?
Michael C. Hall: I mean, I think that’s been the key. That’s the key to the fact that the show has staying power and remains vital. The character’s capacity for evolution is what I’m always looking to explore and what, thankfully, the writers are too.
When we started the show, I don’t think I thought we’d be doing it this long, but I also didn’t foresee the character’s capacity for that evolution and development and change. But I love this season, that emerging in Dexter in the midst of this midlife crisis is an appetite for recognition, to be appreciated. It makes sense that someone who does what he does would want to be known for it in spite of his primary desire not to get caught.
Those things are kind of at odds, but Dexter is always at his best when two oppositional things are in the air at once. But yeah, that was a part of the fun of the journey this year, having that come to the fore for him.
Another thing I love about this season is there are these little father-son moments you have. In the pilot, we have location sharing, you’re sharing the same cell plan, you’re misunderstanding emoji replies. What did you like about getting to have these weirdly mundane moments? And with this show about serial killers, there are these real father-son moments. They’re a really nice change of pace.
Michael C. Hall: Yeah, I think Dexter and Harrison have been through a lot, obviously, and have managed to crawl out of that wreckage. And a few years have passed since the last season, so we could get Harrison through the police academy and working as a cop. And I think they have a relationship that has a sort of shorthand. It’s lived in.
It’s in a way that, in the world of this show, is refreshingly normal and humdrum. As you can imagine, that will be disrupted because there’s too much inherent conflict between the two lives they’re living.
But it was fun to lay that groundwork early on to see these guys just being a regular father and son.
Thanks to Michael C. Hall for taking the time to talk about Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.
