A recent rumor has fueled speculation that Jennifer Lawrence will return to Marvel as Mystique. Lawrence last played Mystique in the 2019 movie Dark Phoenix. Rebecca Romijn, who portrayed Mystique before Lawrence in the X-Men movies, is returning to the role in Avengers: Doomsday.
Is Jennifer Lawrence returning to Marvel?
A new scoop by X user My Time To Shine Hello, also known as MTTSH, suggests that Jennifer Lawrence might be returning as Mystique in Marvel.
MTTSH posted on X, “Jennifer Lawrence had a meeting with Kevin Feige.” However, neither the actress nor the Marvel head has confirmed the rumor. Lawrence played the shapeshifter in X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix. Meanwhile, fans will get to see Mystique, played by Rebecca Romijn, make a comeback in Avengers: Doomsday.
After 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, Lawrence doubted she’d return to the franchise, but she couldn’t turn down an offer from her friend and franchise writer/producer Simon Kinberg. She told Entertainment Weekly, “I kind of f—-d myself.” Lawrence said that she was trying to convince Kinberg to direct, and he told her that if he directed it, she would have to do it. She agreed but admitted the fanbase also led her to return for Dark Phoenix.
Lawrence also revealed that, in Dark Phoenix, she felt most “connected” to her character and that it was, acting-wise, the best experience she’d had on those films. She also praised the shoot for being calm, organized, and fun.
While speaking to PEOPLE in July, Romijn also shared how she felt when she first received the call to return for Doomsday. She said, “It’s all been overwhelming and very surreal. It was a surprising call to get. Of course, my first question was about the makeup process. ‘What are we going to do about that?’ It was very long in the original.”
