Mbappé’s comments on Mao: Chinese Football Association demands apologies from Real Madrid

The CFA’s request comes after the French forward has already issued an apology. LaLiga is also working to maintain its partnerships in China.

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) announced on Tuesday, October 27, that it has requested public and formal apologies from Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappé. This action follows the French forward’s remarks about Mao Zedong.

In a statement released on Weibo, the CFA claims it intervened with the club at the onset of the controversy. It condemns comments that offend the Chinese public and urges internationally renowned athletes to consider the impact of their statements.

Mbappé, for his part, apologized on Tuesday. In a message shared in French, English, and Mandarin, he acknowledged making clumsy remarks and expressed regret for having hurt people in China. The controversy arose from the show The Bridge, where he jokingly referenced a montage linking his face to that of Mao.

The issue has also engaged LaLiga. Its president, Javier Tebas, announced on Tuesday that he met with the Chinese ambassador to Spain to seek solutions. He aims to preserve the partnerships of the Spanish league in China, particularly its agreement with the Chinese Professional Football League, which is in effect until 2029.
