Fans are rubbing their hands ahead of this Premier League heavyweight clash at Anfield, as two Basque managers, Andoni Iraola and Mikel Arteta, go head-to-head. But there is something rather important that American soccer fans need to remember: the clocks.
Liverpool host Arsenal on Sunday, November 1, and if you’re planning your weekend viewing around the game, there’s a little timekeeping business to take care of first.
You may have been aware that last weekend Europe changed its clocks but the United States didn’t? No, it wasn’t just Donald Trump being difficult again. It’s the usual different date for the biannual event. And this weekend America catches up.
At 2 a.m. on Sunday, most (not all) of the US turns its clocks back an hour, ending daylight saving time and restoring the familiar time difference with the UK.
What time is Liverpool vs Arsenal in the US?
The game kicks off at 11:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. PT) on Sunday, November 1, corresponding to 4:30 p.m. GMT in Liverpool, and 5:30 p.m. in the rest of Europe (which caused confusion last weekend with El Clásico).
Without the US clock change, that same British kickoff would have been at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. So anyone using last weekend’s time-zone calculations could find themselves arriving an hour late.
And nobody wants to miss the opening stages of Iraola vs Arteta because of a sleepy Sunday morning calculation.
Why has the time difference between the US and UK changed?
The UK switched to Greenwich Mean Time on October 25, a week before the US ends daylight saving time.
For seven days, New York was just four hours behind London rather than the usual five. Los Angeles was seven hours behind instead of eight.
Sunday’s change puts everything back to normal.
The good news? An extra hour in bed. The bad news? It’s one more reason you miss kickoff. Don’t let that happen!
