iPhone Duo can remember two apps as a pair, so opening either one brings both back together in Split View. Apple’s user guide describes the shortcut for owners who regularly keep the same apps side by side, such as Photos and Messages.

Split View works when the Duo is open in landscape, with each app taking half of the inner display. It can also show two windows from one supported app, including Mail, Notes, Safari and Files.
Tap the divider to save an app pair.
To set up the view, touch and hold an app on the Home Screen or in App Library, choose Open in Split View, then select the second app. With both open, tap the divider between them to pair them.
Apple’s Split View instructions say that the next time either app is opened, the other opens alongside it. To undo the pair, drag the central divider all the way to the left or right edge. That also returns the remaining app to full screen.

Apps can swap sides without rebuilding the layout.
Swipe up from the bottom of one app, pause in the centre, then move it to the opposite side to change its position. For two windows from the same app, first open a supported app in Split View, then tap its icon again from the Home Screen or App Library.
The saved pair is useful when you repeatedly return to the same task: reading a page alongside notes, for example. It reduces the need to find and position the second app each time.
This system-level arrangement is separate from individual apps adapting their own layouts to the hinge. Apple has highlighted editing and gaming interfaces that change when the phone is partially folded; Split View instead divides the open display between two app windows.
