Individual accolades vs team success

Kane may have reached the pinnacle of individual recognition by winning the Ballon d’Or, but the Bayern Munich marksman insists that collective trophies remain his primary motivation. Speaking in Madrid ahead of a crucial European encounter, the 33-year-old striker reflected on his recent triumph while reiterating his desire to bring major silverware to the Allianz Arena. Despite beating out the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal for the golden ball, Kane’s hunger for a maiden Champions League title appears stronger than ever as he prepares to lead the line for the Bundesliga giants once again.

“Team trophies are why we play football. The team aspect of our sport is really, really important,” Kane told reporters in the Spanish capital before Atletico Madric clash. “The Ballon d’Or last week was one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life and my career… but to have moments with the team, celebrations with the club, to be able to lift the Champions League with Bayern would be an incredible feeling. Of course the Ballon d’Or is a highlight, it puts me on an even bigger level, but you want to have these big finals, the Champions League, having that feeling of emotion with your team-mates as well. I would choose the Champions League, but I have the opportunity to do both, let’s see what happens.”

Respect from the opposition and contract news

The veteran forward also took a moment to acknowledge the praise directed his way by Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, who described Kane as an “incredible player” and a positive influence on the sport. Kane, who has faced numerous doubters throughout his rise from the Tottenham academy to the top of world football, expressed his gratitude for the Argentine’s words.

“I’d like to thank Simeone, who is one of the best coaches of this era,” said Kane. “I’m proud to receive praise from someone like him. Winning the Ballon d’Or was a huge achievement for me- I’ve had to overcome many challenges in my career, some people didn’t think I’d get this far… but Simeone will do everything he can to stop me and the team tomorrow.”

Beyond the immediate on-pitch concerns, Kane provided a massive boost to the Bayern faithful by confirming that he is on the verge of signing a new contract extension. “I’d say it’s more days (than weeks)… we’re extremely close now,” the striker added, with his current agreement originally set to run until the summer of 2027.

Erasing the ghosts of 2019

The trip to Madrid is particularly poignant for Kane, as the Metropolitano was the scene of his 2019 Champions League final defeat against Liverpool during his time with Spurs. With this season’s final also scheduled to be held at the same venue, Kane sees a golden opportunity to rewrite his history in the Spanish city.

“You have good memories in stadiums, sometimes you don’t — hopefully we can have a good memory tomorrow,” added Kane. “I play again here next week with England against Spain, and then hopefully at the end of the year we’re back again for the Champions League final. So I have a chance and we have a chance to erase that painful memory from 2019 for sure, and that’s what you can do in life and football, just take the next opportunity.”

I began my journalism career in 2011, initially specializing in investigative reporting. This experience allowed me to explore different fields in depth, develop strong analytical skills, and build a solid foundation in journalism. Eventually, I decided to pursue my first passion: football. I went on to cover the Egyptian national teams across all age groups, while expanding my coverage to include the global game and its biggest stories.

My passion for football began on the pitch, where I played for the youth teams of several Egyptian clubs. That early experience shaped my understanding of the game and fueled my desire to follow football at every level. My journey as a fan of the global game dates back to the 1998 FIFA World Cup, alongside a deep-rooted interest in Egyptian domestic football. However, my connection with the game has never been limited to watching matches on television. I have consistently followed my favorite team, Zamalek, from the stands, experiencing the atmosphere, emotions, and intensity of Egyptian football firsthand. As one of the most successful clubs of the 20th century, Zamalek holds a special place in my football journey.

On the European stage, AC Milan has always been my favorite club, largely because of my admiration for legendary players such as George Weah, Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Kaká, Andrea Pirlo, Ronaldinho, and Clarence Seedorf. My appreciation for these football icons has also made watching historic El Clásico encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona even more enjoyable, allowing me to appreciate the rivalry without taking sides in the endless debates between their supporters. Among all my football memories, one stands above the rest: AC Milan’s redemption against Liverpool in the 2007 UEFA Champions League final, when Filippo Inzaghi scored a historic brace to secure a memorable victory.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with two of the Middle East’s leading sports platforms, Kooora and GOAL.com. These experiences have given me extensive knowledge of both Arab and international football, while allowing me to develop my skills across different areas of sports journalism and digital content. In 2022, I was honored to become a member of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, marking an important milestone in my professional journey. In January 2026, I took another significant step in my career by transitioning to the English-language edition of GOAL.com, broadening my experience in international football journalism and English-language sports content while continuing to pursue my passion for telling the stories that make football the world’s game.
