GTA 6 posts record purchase intent as nearly one in three US gamers plan to buy it

GTA 6 has the highest purchase intent of any video game in Circana’s tracking history. Data from the firm’s PlayerPulse tracker shows 29% of US console and PC gamers plan to buy the title, which Rockstar Games releases on November 19, 2026.

The game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the standard edition priced at $79.99. Rockstar has not confirmed a PC version, although Circana’s survey covered both console and PC players.

GTA 5, the previous mainline entry, remains the best-selling premium game Circana has tracked in the US by both units and dollar sales. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, puts lifetime sell-in for the 2013 release at nearly 230 million units worldwide.

Mat Piscatella, video games industry advisor at Circana, called the release “a rare cultural and commercial moment for the video game industry.” He tied that view to the 13-year gap since GTA 5 and said demand should extend past the game itself into consoles, accessories, and gaming subscriptions.

Piscatella said many consumers who still own previous-generation hardware may buy a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series console specifically to play it. With Black Friday approaching, he named the game as a major source of fourth-quarter spending on software, console upgrades, and gaming tech.

Circana projects US video game spending will rise 3% to $62.8 billion in 2026, which would beat the $61.7 billion record set in 2021, and has cited GTA 6 as a key driver. Take-Two expects record net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion for its fiscal year ending March 2027, led by the game’s launch.

Sensor Tower estimates 6.45 million digital preorders worth about $630 million as of October 20, up from roughly 6.08 million copies and $594 million a week earlier. PlayStation accounts for 74% of those orders and Xbox for 26%. The estimates exclude physical copies, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has confirmed them.

Newzoo estimated in July that the first week of preorders generated about $260 million in global digital spending. Its central scenario puts launch-week sales at about $4.5 billion, or roughly 51 million units at an assumed average price of $88, within a wider range of $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion. Investment bank Piper Sandler forecast in June that the game could sell more than 45 million units on launch day, basing its model on traffic to the r/GTA6 subreddit. GTA 5 sold 11.21 million copies on its first day in 2013.
