Elon Musk doesn’t see the world’s currency having anything to do with money in the future.

On Tuesday, October 20, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, 55, appeared on The Builders podcast, hosted by Walter Isaacson, and predicted that “money becomes irrelevant” if there’s a multiplanetary economy one day with advancements in artificial intelligence, space travel and robots.

“I think currency will be measured in fundamental physics metrics … mass and power or energy, basically,” he stated. “Conventional currency will not matter in the future. So that’s my guess. I think it’s pretty obvious.”

Musk doubled down, saying, “I don’t think money’s gonna matter in the future,” and theorizing that “anyone will be able to have any goods and services that they want.”

“I don’t think even so-called wealthy people will ultimately control the AIs,” he continued. “I think they’ll control themselves.”

Looking at this possible future scenario, Isaacson, 74, asked the businessman how people would still find meaning in life if their needs were satisfied.

“I do struggle with this question. I think people will find ways to be happy in the same way that, say, people who retire seem to be fairly happy even though they’re not working,” Musk said, noting he thinks “the reality” will be that “there won’t be anything that humans can do that the AI and the robots can’t do better.”

As for his current astronomical wealth, Musk claimed it’s “simply a percentage ownership in SpaceX and Tesla” saying “this is going to be taxed quite heavily.”

Despite being the world’s richest man, Musk said his finances “will get whittled down and a few generations from now — if money still matters, which I don’t think it will — my descendants would have a tiny fraction of what I have.”
