Musk’s total political contributions have reached $366 million, making him the largest known donor in the 2026 midterm elections despite earlier pledges to spend less on politics

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has contributed $276 million to Republican super PACs and other organisations over the past three months, bringing his total donations so far to $366 million as the party faces challenges ahead of the US midterm elections.

A spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC confirmed the figures to The Hill, which were first reported by The New York Times.

Between July and September, Musk donated $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates, and another $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which backs GOP candidates for the House of Representatives.

The donations signal Musk’s continued involvement in Republican politics despite earlier suggestions that he would reduce his political spending ahead of the midterms.

America PAC, which Musk launched during the 2024 election campaign, received more than $76 million.

He also donated $10 million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

“If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country,” Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for America PAC, said in a statement to The Times.

The Hill also confirmed the remarks.

“These robust investments have allowed the GOP apparatus to get its message out so Republicans can have a fighting chance to defy history,” Romeo added.

The Hill said it had contacted the Congressional Leadership Fund, the Republican Governors Association, the Republican Attorneys General Association, the Lone Star Liberty PAC and the Senate Leadership Fund for comment.

According to The New York Times, Musk’s latest contributions make him the largest known donor in the 2026 midterm elections.

Musk, who had long stayed away from politics, became deeply involved in the political arena during the 2024 election campaign, spending hundreds of millions of dollars to support Donald Trump’s presidential bid.

He joined Trump on the campaign trail and later headed the administration’s cost-cutting initiative, known as the Department of Government Efficiency. The project attracted controversy over sweeping cuts to federal jobs and funding.

Musk left the White House in late May 2025 following his stint in the administration. After a public fallout with Trump, he remained largely absent from the political spotlight for several months.

In May, Musk said he intended to spend “a lot less” on politics.

During an interview with The Economist in July, he acknowledged that he “got carried away” and became “a little too involved in politics.”

Despite those remarks, Musk returned to political activity that same month, authorising America PAC to spend between $100 million and $120 million on a new field programme aimed at boosting conservative voter turnout in the 2026 midterms.

Musk and Trump have since rebuilt their relationship following their public dispute.

The tech billionaire also joined the president during his state visit to China in May, alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington last month.
