A psychological rift between a teenager and his mother drives the unsettling first footage from Hulu’s upcoming coming-of-age mystery series.
Starring Sam Nivola and Connie Britton, the Phony explores the unsettling question of whether a loved one returning home after a traumatic event is truly who she claims to be.
The story follows Sonny Cook, a teenager whose close bond with his mother changes after a car accident. The mystery begins when Sonny starts believing something is seriously wrong with the woman who returns home.

The Phony trailer opens with Sonny describing himself as lucky to have his mother, Ellen. He calls her his “favorite person,” showing how close they are before the accident changes everything. Ellen is also Sonny’s high school principal, making her a major part of his daily life.
After the crash, Sonny wakes up in a hospital and returns to a world that feels different. He becomes convinced that his mother has been replaced by an impostor. The trailer builds on his growing paranoia as he struggles to convince others that something is wrong.
The footage also highlights small changes in Ellen’s appearance and behavior. Sonny notices details that make him question whether she is really his mother. He later says, “I just want everything to be… like it used to be,” as the mystery becomes harder to explain.
The series combines its unsettling mystery with humor and a coming-of-age story. Nick Paley created the half-hour series and serves as co-showrunner with Anthony King. Paley also wrote and directed the first episode, while 20th Television produces the show.
Britton stars as Ellen, while Nivola plays Sonny. The supporting cast features Meera Syal, Grace Brennan, Mahaela Park, Maliq Johnson, and Colter Lee. Syal portrays Sharla, a private investigator Sonny enlists to help uncover the truth.
Phony premieres October 20, 2026, on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. The series will explore identity, family, and Sonny’s changing view of the world. Britton also serves as an executive producer alongside Paley, King, Charlie Alderman, Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg.
