Channing Tatum has addressed Gambit‘s mysterious origins ahead of his return in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor will reprise the Marvel character after his MCU debut in Deadpool & Wolverine. His latest comments offer new insight into Gambit’s background and his place in the X-Men universe. However, Tatum suggested that the character’s history still has some unanswered questions.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Tatum explained why Deadpool & Wolverine left Gambit’s past largely unexplored. The actor said, “Even where he came from in Deadpool & Wolverine, like you’re saying, he hasn’t been anywhere, in a way, and he was born in The Void, in a way.” He further explained, “It doesn’t go into it, is what I would say. We start in such a place that we never really get to address where he’s come from.”
The comments suggest that Marvel hasn’t fully established Gambit’s backstory, but the actor confirmed that the character belongs to a familiar X-Men timeline.

Avengers: Doomsday could connect Gambit to some familiar X-Men faces
Tatum confirmed that Gambit comes from the same X-Men timeline as Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, James Marsden’s Cyclops, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique. However, he described the connection as having “gray around it,” indicating some aspects of the character’s history remain uncertain.
The upcoming Avengers film could explore this connection as Marvel brings several familiar X-Men actors back together. McKellen, Stewart, and Marsden are among the stars returning for Avengers: Doomsday, allowing the film to revisit the franchise’s earlier characters.
Gambit’s appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine introduced him to the MCU through The Void. The character’s origins could provide another connection between the Fox-era X-Men films and Marvel’s current cinematic universe. However, Marvel hasn’t confirmed whether Avengers: Doomsday will explain how Gambit ended up in The Void or reveal more about his past. Tatum’s comments also don’t establish whether the character will reunite with the returning X-Men.
Avengers: Doomsday will release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
