Bottom-placed Sunderland stunned Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea with a 1-0 home victory on Sunday, while Liverpool secured a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace in the 10th round of the English Premier League.

Sunderland, who entered the match with just five points after nine games and five defeats in their previous six league outings, pulled off a major upset against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute after Chelsea defender Levi Colwill brought down Brian Brobbey inside the box as the Sunderland striker raced onto a clearance.

French midfielder Enzo Le Fee stepped up three minutes later and sent goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way, slotting the ball into the bottom corner to give the Black Cats a 1-0 lead.

Sunderland held onto their narrow advantage for the remainder of the match, despite losing captain Granit Xhaka to an early injury, to secure only their second league victory of the season.

The victory lifted Sunderland to 18th place with eight points after 10 matches, while Alonso’s Chelsea dropped to fifth with 16 points after suffering their fourth league defeat of the campaign.

Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 3-1 to extend hosts’ losing streak

In Sunday’s other encounter, Liverpool defeated struggling Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park to move to 18 points.

Palace, who entered the match in the relegation zone with seven points, were without suspended striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as head coach Pierre Sage sought to end a three-match losing streak.

The hosts struck the crossbar through Yeremy Pino in the 18th minute and had a goal disallowed for offside before Alexis Mac Allister headed home Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick in the 40th minute to give Liverpool the lead.

Florian Wirtz doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 54th minute, finishing Bradley Barcola’s pass with a precise right-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Alexander Isak made it 3-0 in the 89th minute before Eddie Nketiah converted a stoppage-time penalty to pull a goal back for Palace.

Liverpool climbed into the Premier League’s top four with 18 points after 10 matches, while Palace dropped to the bottom of the standings with seven points following their fourth consecutive league defeat.
