Todd Haynes has dropped a major update on his next project. The filmmaker recently wrapped filming De Noche, his upcoming romantic drama starring Pedro Pascal.
In a recent interview with Le Point, Haynes revealed that he will adapt Jean Genet’s 1947 play Les Bonnes (The Maids) and indicated that Cate Blanchett might star in the film.
“I’ll let you in on something: my next film—after the one I’m currently finishing, De Noche —will be an adaptation of The Maids!” Haynes said. “I have a very particular approach to the story; I obviously can’t say anything, but I’ve never seen this approach anywhere else…I think Cate Blanchett, who performed the play on stage with Isabelle Huppert, will be in my film.”
Todd Haynes’ De Noche movie has had a troubled production
Todd Haynes’ queer romance film De Noche has faced major setbacks during production. The project came to an abrupt halt when Joaquin Phoenix, who had developed the script with Haynes and Jon Raymond, walked away just days before filming was set to commence. The unexpected exit led to the film’s cancellation, which reportedly cost the production company more than $1 million.
The project was revived in August 2025 as De Noche, with Pascal replacing Phoenix in the lead role and Danny Ramirez joining the cast. Producer Christine Vachon has credited Pascal with saving the film. Speaking with Variety at the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year, she said, “I think we got the happy ending that we deserved, or that Todd deserved, which is Pedro Pascal ultimately playing the role.” Vachon added, “If you take the glass-half-full version of ‘everything happens for a reason,’ maybe the reason was that this was a role Pedro was born to play.”
De Noche is reportedly eyeing a 2027 release; however, an official release date remains under wraps.
