The UK doesn’t technically have a national dish, but if we had to choose we’d put our money on a chippy tea. Battered cod (or haddock, depending who you ask) and thick-cut chips are about as British as it gets, and we’re not the only ones who think so. A recent YouGov survey found that 49 percent of Britons believe fish and chips is the country’s signature dish. Sorry Sunday roast, you’ll have to settle for second place.
It’s just as well, then, that there’s a coveted competition to find the ultimate UK fish fry. Each year, the National Federation of Fish Friers holds its National Fish & Chip Awards to find the best in Britain. The shortlist for the 2027 edition’s best restaurant award was announced earlier this month, with chippies in Dorset, London, Yorkshire and Edinburgh making the cut.
But for many of us, part of the magic of fish and chips is being able bring them home or take ’em away to eat on our local promenade. Now, the UK’s top takeaways have also been revealed. The National Fish & Chip Awards has unveiled the 20 semi-finalists for its coveted Takeaway of the Year title, and it’s mapped out all the contenders to make it easier for you to find your local.
Londoners will be disappointed to hear that none of the capital’s fish and chip makers made the shortlist this year. Meanwhile, Scotland is serving up some of the best battered cod in the land, with four of its foodie spots ranking in the top 20. Two Welsh chip shops have also been highlighted. The Scrap Box in York, which took home the ultimate accolade in 2026, hasn’t made the cut for 2027.
