Wolfsburg’s Cora Zicai grateful for first Germany starting opportunity

Germany international Cora Zicai has expressed her relief at returning to the German national team following Friday evening’s 4-2 friendly victory over Australia in Karlsruhe. The 21-year-old Wolfsburg winger made the most of her opportunity after an injury-disrupted period that had threatened to interrupt her emergence as one of German football’s most promising young attackers.

Zicai was handed a starting role on the right flank by national team coach Christian Wück. The youngster featured throughout Germany’s dominant opening half, offering pace, direct dribbling and an attacking outlet as the hosts established a 2-0 lead through Melissa Kössler’s first international goals.

The Freiburg native narrowly missed an early opportunity to open the scoring herself, firing over from eight metres after Klara Bühl picked her out in the third minute. Zicai nevertheless remained lively on the wing and continued to involve herself in Germany’s attacking combinations.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Zicai expressed satisfaction with her return to the international stage.

“I’m really grateful to have been given the chance to start,” the Wolfsburg attacker explained. “I just told myself to enjoy it and get some minutes under my belt. It was a relief to be back involved. Having Carlotta [Wamser] behind me gave me confidence because I knew I could rely on her if I ever got caught out.”

Cora Zicai’s budding career as a Germany international

Zicai’s emergence as a senior international has been several years in the making. Born in Freiburg in November 2004, she progressed through SC Freiburg’s youth system before making her Frauen-Bundesliga debut in March 2021.

Her development accelerated over the following seasons, culminating in an impressive 2024/25 campaign. Zicai scored eight Bundesliga goals and established herself as one of Freiburg’s most effective attacking players, attracting attention from clubs further up the German footballing hierarchy.

Wolfsburg subsequently secured her services ahead of the 2025/26 season, providing the winger with an opportunity to compete for domestic honours and experience Champions League football. The transfer coincided with her growing involvement in Germany’s senior national team.

During the 2025 European Championship, however, opportunities proved limited. Our comprehensive Get German Football News group-stage assessment noted that the talented Freiburg native had been restricted to a brief substitute appearance against Denmark.

At the time, we identified Zicai as one of several attacking prospects whose opportunities would inevitably increase in the coming years. Our subsequent tactical analysis ahead of Germany’s quarter-final against France again highlighted Zicai among the attacking alternatives available to Wück.

Her progression nevertheless continued to require patience. The competition for places in Germany’s attacking positions remained intense, with established internationals Klara Bühl and Jule Brand occupying prominent roles.

Wolfsburg setbacks give way to a fresh opportunity

Zicai’s first season at Wolfsburg provided valuable experience but was also interrupted by fitness problems. The 21-year-old returned to Germany’s squad in March 2026 after an earlier illness-related training deficit. Muscular difficulties subsequently forced her to withdraw from April’s World Cup qualifiers against Austria.

Such interruptions complicated her efforts to establish continuity with the national team, but Zicai has since regained both fitness and confidence. The winger has made an encouraging start to the current Frauen-Bundesliga campaign, scoring four goals in Wolfsburg’s opening six league fixtures. Her performances have strengthened her case for a more substantial role in Wück’s plans ahead of the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Zicai’s first start follows previous opportunities that had exclusively been confined to substitute appearances. Our October 2025 tactical review of Germany’s Nations League victory over France noted that her late introduction helped invigorate the German attack.

The same qualities that made Zicai an exciting Freiburg prospect remain apparent today. Her acceleration, willingness to attack defenders and ability to create opportunities from wide positions provide Wück with another valuable attacking option.

As our latest Germany squad assessment noted, competition for attacking positions continues to intensify as preparations for next summer’s World Cup gather pace. Friday’s performance may not have produced a goal or an assist for Zicai, but it nevertheless represented another important step forward.

Germany face Japan in Bremen on Tuesday evening, with Zicai hoping that her move to the starting XI marks the beginning of a more sustained run in the national team.
