“In Milan, the skirt is the new T-shirt,” US Vogue’s head of editorial content, Chloe Malle, declared on The Run-Through podcast during a recap of the spring/summer 2027 shows. She was referring, of course, to the skirts – all 63 of them – that Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons sent down the Prada runway: schoolgirl pleats crafted from leather; knee-skimming slips of organza; skirts honed from floral crystal mesh; skirts with Velcro inserts, daisy prints, silken ruffles, jumbo sequins or unfurling corsages. So. Many. Skirts!
Malle’s words echoed those of Mrs P herself, who was famously quoted back in 2006 as saying: “The skirt for me is like a T-shirt.” For Prada and Simons, next season it acts an individual styling tool: a blank canvas and the basis of an outfit. But it’s not mundane, plain or staid – rather it’s patterned, paillette-encrusted and prismatic. It’s brimming with personality.
