Ayaneo is shifting tactics. Usually known for expensive premium portables, the company is now moving into the budget retro scene through a new sub-brand named Konkr. Its debut device is the Pocket Block. This $89 Android handheld shrinks the familiar vertical Game Boy footprint into something far more pocketable, and international shipping officially kicks off this October.
Modernizing the classic Game Boy design
While the physical shell mimics older Nintendo hardware, the screen technology is strictly modern. The Pocket Block sports a 3.33-inch IPS LCD panel running at a 960 x 720 resolution. That specific 4:3 aspect ratio provides clean integer scaling when rendering 8-bit and 16-bit games.
It weighs only 165 grams, yet the hardware still includes standard connectivity. Users get a USB-C charging port, a physical 3.5mm audio jack, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth support for pairing external wireless controllers.
Internal specifications and emulation limits
MediaTek provides the processing power with its Helio G85 chipset. Customers must choose between a base configuration sporting 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage or an upgraded model offering 3GB of RAM paired with 64GB of space.
Since the hardware runs a standard installation of Android 12, owners can download standalone emulators straight from the digital storefront. Performance on the Helio G85 holds up well for early console generations. The SNES, Sega Genesis, and original PlayStation run perfectly out of the box. Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast emulation works reliably too. Heavier PlayStation Portable games are the real ceiling here, as players will likely need to tweak resolution settings to hold a steady 60 frames per second.
Pricing and shipping rollout
The base 2GB Konkr Pocket Block retails for $89, though early buyers grabbed it for $79 during a brief promotional window. Stepping up to the 3GB version pushes the final price to $99.
Ayaneo started domestic shipping within China on October 15, and the broader international rollout will launch by the end of the month. Buyers hoping to snag the cheaper model should prepare for severe stock shortages as the holiday shopping season begins.
