The Batman Part II‘s production has been rocky, to say the least. Originally announced four years ago, the sequel to 2022’s hit The Batman has suffered from numerous delays. While the film is in production now, it’s run into yet another problem.

Earlier this month, with production for the film underway in England and Scotland, filming was halted. According to reports at the time, director Matt Reeves had to step away from the film due to a family matter. Reports suggested filming would be paused until Reeves was ready to return. But that changed this week, when it was reported that director Steven Soderbergh would be stepping in to direct the remainder of principal photography.

According to reports, Soderbergh approached Reeves and asked if he could be of any assistance on finishing the film. A friend and noted admirer of Reeves’ work, Soderbergh volunteered to help Reeves finish the movie. In a statement on the move, Reeves confirmed Soderbergh would step in to help, at which point Reeves will continue to work on the film’s post-production.

News of the move quickly sent fans into a frenzy. While some weren’t too concerned with it, many began likening the news to that of the situation regarding Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie, which saw Joss Whedon step in to finish the movie after Snyder was forced to leave production. However, while it’s fair to be concerned to a degree, the news is probably the best news that we could’ve gotten.

Fans are overreacting to The Batman Part II’s latest news

For starters, to address the Joss Whedon comparisons, there is really nothing connecting the two. The Whedon and Snyder situation seemed to have a lot more behind-the-scenes things happening at the time, especially in regards to WB’s involvement in the film.

In the case of The Batman Part II, Reeves is not only not leaving the production of the film, but will continue to work on it, just while away from set. Not only is Reeves set to keep working on the movie, but most importantly, he’ll be handling all post-production work.

This means the film’s edits, tone, and how it comes together will still fully be handled by Reeves. Unlike other instances where replacement directors needed to come in, this seems more of a case of two filmmaker friends coming together to make sure the project isn’t delayed any further. In that regard, the fact that Soderbergh himself is stepping in to help is huge news.

Soderbergh is an acclaimed director in his own right, having made movies like Erin Brockovich, Contagion, The Informant!, Kimi, and most recently, 2024’s Presence and 2025’s Black Bag. Furthermore, Soderbergh is a huge champion to other filmmakers, historically so. In 2002, Soderbergh helped Christopher Nolan secure funding for his movie Insomnia after meeting with executives at Warner Bros. Soderberg also has a history of serving as second-unit director for a number of films, including across big franchises like The Hunger Games, so he won’t be too out of his element by stepping into The Batman Part II.

Ultimately, it’s normal to be a bit concerned on the film’s production. The Batman Part II has seen countless delays continually push back the film, and now it seems like Reeves won’t be around to finish on-set work at all. However, Soderbergh’s involvement, as well as the fact that Reeves will still be handling post-production and working with Soderbergh remotely, should put everyone at ease.
