Stock Market Week in Review – 11/2 – 11/6

It’s a rally. It’s a sell-off. At the end of the week, the only thing that was clear was confusion. Investors were hoping to get clarity with the U.S. midterm elections behind them. Instead, they got more volatility.

The reason is uncertainty about future regulation surrounding data centers. The conventional wisdom suggests it may not be as bad as the worst-case scenario. But any regulation is likely to slow down a trade that looked like a runaway train.

That’s likely to mean the flight to safety will continue. A strong jobs report on Friday raised the odds for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in December. Dividend payers may still appeal to investors seeking income, particularly those that offer a yield above the current rate of inflation.

Speaking of inflation, next week investors will get the latest reading on inflation at the consumer and producer levels. A hot number from either report will likely cement expectations for higher rates and will likely keep volatility front and center.
