Horror movie crossovers are not a novel idea in Hollywood. However, Stephen King might just have the next million-dollar idea at hand to capitalize on the success of films like Alien vs. Predator and Freddy vs. Jason.
Stephen King believes a crossover between Children of the Corn and Leprechaun could make for a fun horror movie, giving fans a chance to debate which of the two would come out on top.
What makes this matchup, and King’s idea, interesting is that Children of the Corn is based on his own short story of the same name. In this hypothetical crossover, the children would come face-to-face with the Leprechaun, a cult horror icon whose first movie was made on a budget of well under $1 million.
Stephen King’s horror matchup brings two cult classics together
Stephen King’s Children of the Corn follows a malevolent entity in the fictional town of Gatlin, Nebraska. It persuades children to form a cult and kill anyone over the age of 18. Fritz Kiersch directed the film, with George Goldsmith writing the screenplay. The cast includes Peter Horton, Linda Hamilton, R. G. Armstrong, John Franklin, and Courtney Gains, among others.
Leprechaun came out much later and was a much smaller movie. Written and directed by Mark Jones, the movie starred some well-known talent, such as Warwick Davis, Jennifer Aniston, Ken Olandt, Mark Holton, and Robert Gorman. The movie followed a vengeful leprechaun who believes that his pot of gold has been stolen by a family. He goes on to hunt the family, with the objective of getting his gold back. Davis plays the titular monster.
King pitting these two characters against each other is a fun premise. However, the Leprechaun franchise is currently owned by Trimark Pictures. Children of the Corn was produced by New World Pictures. Therefore, it is unlikely that the crossover could officially happen. But if King were open to penning the story, perhaps a studio could show interest in the hypothetical project.
