Samsung has explored a way to give your home screen a familiar face: your own. A newly published patent application describes a system that uses your photo to create personalized app icons, with the person in the picture doing something that represents each app.
That could mean a miniature version of you wearing headphones for a music app, running for a fitness app, or holding popcorn for a streaming service. The idea isn’t limited to people, either. You could use a pet or even a fictional character to give your home screen a more personal touch.

Personalized app icons that look different for every app
Spotted by Patentlyze, Samsung’s application describes combining details from a selected photo with information about an app. That includes its category, descriptive tags, existing colors, and elements of its original icon.
Instead of simply putting the same cropped selfie on every shortcut, the system would generate a design based on what each app does. Some examples in the filing include:
- Music: a person wearing a headset to show they are listening.
- Fitness: a recognizable face combined with a running pose.
- Video streaming: a person holding popcorn while watching a video.
- Messaging: a person with their hands near their mouth to suggest speaking.
The system could also carry over colors or parts of the original logo. That would help distinguish the apps, even when several icons feature the same person.
Samsung describes selecting a picture through an icon creation tool or the gallery, then choosing which apps to personalize. The filing allows for changing selected icons or applying the treatment across all installed apps.

Generative AI is one proposed way to create these designs. Processing could happen directly on the device or through a server, although the application doesn’t establish which approach Samsung would use.
Christmas outfits and matching icons across devices
Samsung’s idea goes beyond creating a single set of personalized icons. The filing describes using additional information, including the season, weather, and location, to change their appearance.
For example, a winter or Christmas theme could add snow effects to icons when the weather is cold. Users could also enter a prompt to request a particular seasonal look.
The same idea could extend to widgets. A weather widget, for instance, could show a personalized version of the user dressed for the current conditions. Samsung also describes sharing generated designs across devices signed into the same account, including phones, tablets, smartwatches, and headsets.
There is even a foldable-specific example. Icons on the main display could show a more recognizable face, while the cover screen uses a simpler figure that reveals less personal detail to people nearby.
A patent application, with no promised release
The US application, numbered US20260341000A1, was published on October 29, 2026, following a filing on May 28. However, the idea isn’t entirely new, as Samsung’s earliest related Korean application dates back to November 30, 2023.
As with any patent, there’s no guarantee Samsung will turn this into an actual feature. The application doesn’t mention a launch date, supported Galaxy devices, or a specific One UI version. Still, turning your favorite photo into personalized app icons sounds like a fun addition to Galaxy customization, provided those icons remain easy to recognize.
