Ryan Seacrest made a mix-up with a contestant’s family during a recent episode of Wheel of Fortune. The moment came before contestant Cory Lyons faced the Bonus Round, where a missed answer cost him a shot at a much bigger payday.
Ryan Seacrest embarrassed after mistaking contestant’s children for roommates
The awkward exchange happened during the October 30 episode of Wheel of Fortune, which featured Lyons, a Halloween enthusiast from Springfield, Illinois, competing against Ope Ifafore of Middleton, New York, and Kathy Seetoo of Freehold, New Jersey.
Lyons finished the main game with $21,598 after solving several puzzles, including Candyman or Beetlejuice? and Go Where the Locals Go. The latter answer also earned him a trip to England.
When the show returned from a commercial break, Seacrest revealed that he had a funny mix-up with Lyons’ guests while the cameras were off. He approached the trio and asked about their connection to the contestant, assuming they were his roommates. The group quickly corrected him, saying they were actually Lyons’ children. Caught off guard, Seacrest responded with a surprised, “Wow. Good job.” Lyons then dropped another surprise, revealing that he had two more children waiting for him at home.
The family mix-up was not the only memorable moment from the episode. Lyons entered the Bonus Round with a chance to add a huge amount to his winnings. He picked the What Are You Wearing? category and received the standard letters R, S, T, L, N, and E before choosing D, C, H, and O.
Lyons tried several possibilities to answer the puzzle. However, none matched the correct answer: “Wool Blazer.” The envelope contained $40,000. Had Lyons solved the puzzle, that prize would have pushed his total winnings to $61,598. Instead, he finished the episode with the $21,598 he had earned during the main game.
