Rami Malek & Jon Bernthal’s Underrated Spy Thriller Finds New Streaming Home

The action thriller movie The Amateur, starring Rami Malek and Jon Bernthal, will arrive on HBO Max soon. The film, also starring Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Brosnahan, was a moderate box-office success and received a positive reception from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Rami Malek-led thriller is coming to HBO Max this month

The spy thriller The Amateur, starring Oscar winner Rami Malek in the lead role, is coming to HBO Max on October 17. 2026, according to Warner Bros.’ latest press release.

Besides Malek, the movie features a talented cast including Jon Bernthal, Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Stuhlbarg. James Hawes directed the film, and Malek also served as a producer.

Released in April 2025, the movie made over $40 million domestically and over $55 million internationally, bringing its global collection to just over $96 million (via Box Office Mojo). The film also received positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. On the Tomatometer, The Amateur received an average score of 61 percent based on reviews from critics. Meanwhile, it got a much higher score of 87 percent on the Popcornmeter based on audience reviews.

Critics praised Malek’s performance and lauded the film for capturing the vibe of an old-school spy thriller. However, a main criticism of the movie was its slow script and underuse of its supporting cast.

While speaking to Disney in 2025, Malek shared that he got to read an early script of the movie after Bohemian Rhapsody. He said at that time that he liked the early draft of the movie, but it still needed work. Malek added, “So I took a beat and came back to it, because it kept scratching at the back of my head as to how to make it something special. It just never really left my mind.”
