The Marvel universe may never be the same after the shocking death of Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier. Marvel Comics just killed Captain America’s best friend in the ongoing Avengers: Armageddon series, and the heroes will have to reckon with the development in the coming issues.
The death arrives months before the character begins preparations to face off against Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Armageddon, written by Chip Zdarsky, follows the heroes facing off against an uncontrollable Red Hulk. The Winter Soldier’s death has been teased in the weeks leading up to the event. The character, internationally popularized by Sebastian Stan’s portrayal in the MCU, had previously taken on the mantle of Captain America.
How did the Winter Soldier die in Avengers: Armageddon?
In Armageddon #4, the battle takes everyone to Russia, where the Red Hulk has been turned into a ticking bomb. During a battle with the Avengers, the Red Hulk explodes, taking out Bucky Barnes and several Russian civilians with him. It remains to be seen how the Avengers, including David Colton, will deal with the new loss.
A preview for Avengers: Armageddon #5 shows the U.N. getting frustrated with the Avengers’ failure to contain collateral damage.
This is not the first time that Bucky Barnes has died. In Marvel comics, the character was presumed dead for over four decades before being revived as the Winter Soldier. Following that, Barnes was killed by Sin in 2011’s Fear Itself but was revived once again shortly afterwards.
In the live-action front, Bucky canonically died once after Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. However, he was revived in the following movie, Avengers: Endgame, by Hulk’s use of a new Infinity Gauntlet.
Marvel Comics will follow up Armageddon with Avengers #1 under the Earth’s Mightiest Survivors title, resetting the series numbering once more. A new trailer for the series shows Spider-Man teaming up with Wolverine.
