Marco Rose joked he might treat himself to a non-alcoholic beer after Bournemouth beat 10-man Sunderland 2-0 to secure their first Premier League win of the season.
Evanilson starred on Sunday afternoon at the Vitality Stadium, teeing up Marcus Tavernier’s sixth-minute opener, drawing the red card that got Kevin Danso sent off in the 17th minute and doubling the Cherries’ lead three minutes into the second half.
German boss Rose, for whom it was also a maiden English top-flight victory, revealed his relief at the momentum-shifting win, their second in a row after Thursday night’s historic Europa League triumph over Sturm Graz at the Vitality Stadium.
Reminded that after that contest – Bournemouth’s first European match at home – he had given Adam Smith permission to celebrate with a beer, Rose said: “(I won’t do) anything special. My family is here and tomorrow it’s a day off for the lads.
“Adam can have another beer today if he wants and if I drink one I will drink a non-alcoholic.”
Jokes aside, the 50-year-old does appreciate the significance of the result, which also lifted the Cherries out of the relegation zone.
Rose said: “If I’m honest, I feel relief, but not just me. That’s what I feel, everyone here in the club, because everyone feels that the work we do is good, that the way we stick together is good.
“Everyone, everything is in the right place, but if you don’t get the results, then you have to answer questions. That’s the point.
“Today we have our first win, but we need more and want more. That’s very important, because we are still in a tough situation.”
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris, whose side could go bottom of the Premier League table depending on Tottenham’s result on Monday evening, was especially frustrated by the fact that even the Black Cats’ failures this season have been inconsistent.
Danso and Omar Alderete’s inability to deal with a ball over the top led to the opener and Aldrete’s poor back pass resulted in their second-half undoing.
“It’s always different,” he said. “It’s a different player every time, so it’s hard to fix with a specific pattern.
“So it’s about accountability, it’s about discipline, it’s about reading the game well and at the minute that’s not the case, so we get punished.”
