Manchester City expulsion risk escalates as Premier League executives exchange private messages

According to The Independent, a senior executive from a top-flight club warned that the potential sanctions stemming from the club’s alleged financial rule breaches have created an “absurd” situation that could even “turn violent.”

Suspension or expulsion? What Rule 6B says

According to the report, Premier League executives have already exchanged messages to discuss whether Manchester City should be suspended immediately or whether 15 clubs could push for a vote to expel the reigning champions from the competition.

Under Premier League Rule 6B, a club can be expelled if at least 15 member clubs vote in favor of the measure. However, The Independent reports that such an outcome remains unlikely due to conflicting interests among club owners and the potential legal consequences.

Manchester City answer on the pitch with a 3-0 win at Anfield

While the controversy continues off the field, Enzo Maresca‘s side delivered a statement on it, defeating Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield. The Reds finished the match with 10 men in a tense atmosphere, as home supporters repeatedly chanted “cheats” at the visitors.

Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku, and Rayan Cherki scored the goals, while Maresca described the victory as a crucial moment that strengthened the unity within the club.

Enzo Maresca makes Manchester City history

The victory over Liverpool marked Maresca’s sixth consecutive Premier League win since replacing Pep Guardiola this summer.

Only three managers had previously won each of their first six Premier League matches in charge of a club:

  • Pep Guardiola with Manchester City in 2016/17.
  • Carlo Ancelotti with Chelsea in 2009/10.
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Manchester United after taking over in December 2018.

Manchester City will host Ipswich Town on October 17, and another victory would see Maresca set a new Premier League record. No manager has ever won each of his first seven league matches in charge of a club.
