A lingering Gotham mystery introduced in HBO’s Lanterns could serve as a bridge to future DCU storylines.
In Episode 5 of the sci-fi drama, a flashback revealed that Sheriff Kerry Kane fled Gotham for Rushville in 2007 while being hunted by mobsters connected to her father’s criminal past.
The episode never revealed who sent the hit squad or which crime family they represented. However, series showrunner Chris Mundy recently confirmed to CBR that the creative team already knows the answer.
“We’ve never really gotten into it, so I don’t want to say specifically, in case it comes up [later],” Mundy explained. “But [it’s] the criminal underworld in Gotham. We’ve discussed it a lot, and we would have an answer in about 30 seconds!”
While the writing room discussed the backstory extensively, they chose not to lock down specific names on screen during Season 1. “Because we didn’t answer it on screen as a collective, we never said, ‘OK, definitively we’re going to say this,’” Mundy added. “But we all kind of know.”
Unpacking Kerry’s unresolved backstory offers the series a seamless way to explore Gotham’s criminal underworld in future seasons without having to immediately feature Batman.
Lanterns also sets up John Stewart’s role in Man of Tomorrow
Beyond grounded crime mysteries, the Season 1 finale established John Stewart’s relevance in the broader DCU. Following the tragic death of veteran ring-wielder Hal Jordan, John officially inherits the Green Lantern mantle as Earth’s primary protector.
Actor Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as John Stewart alongside David Corenswet in director James Gunn’s upcoming DCU sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
John’s new status gives Man of Tomorrow an opportunity to continue his journey after the events of Lanterns. Meanwhile, the series can still revisit its unresolved Gotham storyline if HBO moves forward with another season.
Man of Tomorrow will finally hit the theaters on July 9, 2027.
