Jumanji: Open World is shaping up to be the final installment in this rebooted trilogy. The finale brings a new storyline, with a decision which could fix the previous two movies’ biggest issue.

The new trailer for Jumanji: Open World marks the return of stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan. In the first two movies, the action mostly took place inside a video game. In Open World, Jumanji‘s action and adventure have spilled into the real world, forcing the characters to work together to end this difficult situation.

Jumanji: Open World is the movie in the reboot trilogy that channels the spirit of 1995’s Jumanji the most. This choice should ultimately pay off with a satisfying conclusion.

Jumanji: Open World must break free from its repetitive formula to close out the trilogy

The Jumanji reboot smartly pivoted in a new direction. Instead of keeping the action centered on a board game in the real world, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle placed the characters inside a video game. The gamble paid off. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle garnered positive reviews and grossed $963 million worldwide.

The sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level, ran into problems with its premise. Next Level essentially played the hits of Welcome to the Jungle: The characters return to their avatars inside the game to save the world and escape back into the real world. While The Next Level still received generally positive reviews and grossed $801 million worldwide, it lacked unique ideas. It felt more like a rehash of Welcome to the Jungle instead of a fresh adventure. Next Level followed a familiar formula, but it forgot to reinvent itself.

Jumanji: Open World feels like a reinvention of the reboot trilogy. For the first time since the original movie, Jumanji is heading into the real world. Frankly, it’s about time that happened. One of Jumanji’s best qualities is seeing how people in the real world interact with the game’s animals, characters, and chaos. That original Jumanji spirit and energy appears to be present in Open World, which should only elevate the finale.

There is nothing wrong with reusing successful storylines and tropes in a sequel. It becomes a problem when the sequel acts like a shot-for-shot remake of its predecessor. The Jumanji reboot has two movies so far, but honestly, it feels like one big film due to the constant similarities the movies share. Open World can change that and ensure the trilogy ends on a high note.
