Family estrangement appears to have been proliferating in recent years. My mum has recounted countless stories of friends left bewildered and heartbroken by adult children who have seemingly turned their backs on them.
Meanwhile, I know several people who have begun to rethink the boundaries and expectations they have with their own parents. And while we are often quick to champion someone who finds the courage to extricate themselves from a toxic romantic relationship, we tend to regard familial estrangement as something tragic rather than empowering.
In a culture that places enormous sentimental value on biological ties, the idea of severing those bonds can seem almost sacrilegious. For someone who is luckily close with both my parents, the prospect of estrangement is particularly difficult to fathom and I cannot help but imagine the pain that exists on both sides of that divide.
The parents mourning a relationship they no longer recognise, and the children reckoning with whatever circumstances compelled them to walk away from the people who raised them.
Of course, these complicated family dynamics are hardly confined to ordinary households. Celebrities including Meghan Markle, Charli D’Amelio, Brooklyn Beckham and Rihanna have all navigated the complicated path of cutting ties with their parents, perhaps even helping to normalise a phenomenon that has long been considered taboo. Most recently, Charli D’Amelio has commented on the tensions within her family, including rumours concerning the mishandling of her finances.
While familial estrangement remains heavily stigmatised, a growing number of celebrities have begun lifting the lid on their own fractured family dynamics, offering insight into the circumstances that led them to distance themselves from those closest to them.
Ahead, we look at the famous faces who have publicly navigated estrangement from one or both parents.
Brooklyn Beckham
Brooklyn Beckham’s highly publicised rift with his famous family reached breaking point in January 2026, when he shared a series of scathing Instagram Stories detailing the breakdown of his relationship with his parents, David and Victoria Beckham.
According to Brooklyn, tensions began to escalate following his 2022 wedding to Nicola Peltz, with the eldest Beckham son levelling several accusations against his parents, including claims that they had attempted to “ruin” his marriage.
“My wife has been consistently disrespected by my family, no matter how hard we’ve tried to come together as one,” he wrote.
“Since the moment I started standing up for myself with my family, I’ve received endless attacks from my parents, both privately and publicly.”
While David and Victoria have never directly addressed their son’s allegations, they appeared to extend an olive branch two months after his statement, publicly wishing Brooklyn a happy birthday on social media.
Charli D’Amelio
Charli D’Amelio recently opened up about the strained relationship she has with her parents, Marc and Heidi, as well as sister Dixie following speculation that they had mishandled millions of dollars earned during her rise to TikTok stardom.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 22-year-old denied allegations that her parents had stolen her money, but reflected on the personal toll of finding fame at such a young age, including the loss of her childhood and struggles with her sense of identity.
“I was a child, which I didn’t really get the significance of at the time, but I can see it very clearly now,” she said.
While acknowledging her gratitude for her parents’ involvement and support of her fledgling career, Charli also questioned aspects of her upbringing and revealed that stepping away from social media had forced her to confront how little she knew about herself beyond her public profile.
As of October 2026, Charli doesn’t follow Heidi, Marc or Dixie on social media (and vice versa).
Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle has been estranged from her father, Thomas Markle Sr., since the lead-up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.
Just days before the royal nuptials, Thomas became embroiled in controversy after it emerged that he had staged photographs for the paparazzi. He subsequently withdrew from the ceremony, citing health concerns.
During Meghan and Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Meghan revealed that she and Harry had confronted her father over whether he had been cooperating with tabloid journalists, which he allegedly denied.
Thomas later expressed regret over the incident during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, telling Piers Morgan, “I wish I hadn’t done the whole thing.”
More recently, Thomas has reportedly become the subject of an investigation into allegations that he possessed child sexual abuse material. According to The Sun, the allegations were brought to the attention of authorities by his son, Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, who is also estranged from the Duchess of Sussex. He is yet to respond to the allegations and has not been arrested or charged.
Meghan remains close to her mother, Doria Ragland, who divorced Thomas Markle Sr. when Meghan was six years old.
Rihanna
Rihanna endured a complicated, on-again, off-again relationship with her late father, Robert Fenty, with tensions between the pair dating back more than a decade.
Their relationship became particularly strained in 2009, when Robert reportedly sold details of his daughter’s assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown to the media.
In an interview with US Vogue in April 2011, Rihanna opened up about the sense of betrayal she felt over her father’s decision to speak publicly about such a traumatic chapter of her life.
“My dad went to the press and just told them a bunch of lies. Because he hadn’t talked to me after … that whole thing. He never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a check.”
She continued, “Like, what do I even mean to him? It’s really strange. That’s the only word I can think of to describe it, because you grow up with your father, you know him, you are a part of him, for goodness sakes! And then he does something so bizarre that I can’t begin to wrap my mind around it. You hear the horror stories about people going behind people’s backs and doing strange things, but you always think, ‘Not my family. My father would never do that to me.’”
Thy later would patch up their relationship, but in 2019 Rihanna filed a lawsuit against her father over his use of the Fenty name, which had become synonymous with her burgeoning beauty and fashion empire.
Robert had established a company called Fenty Entertainment, which Rihanna alleged had misled the public and infringed upon the brand identity she had cultivated through ventures including Fenty Beauty and her lingerie label, Savage X Fenty. Robert passed away in 2025 at the age of 70 following reported health complications.
