General Hospital takes four awards at 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards
General Hospital secured four wins at the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday. However, The Kelly Clarkson Show topped the night with five victories, edging out the long-running ABC soap opera.
Notably, General Hospital claimed its sixth consecutive Outstanding Daytime Drama Series award. Executive Producer Frank Valentini led the team that bested fellow nominees Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, and Beyond the Gates. Additionally, the show won for Outstanding Writing Team for a Daytime Drama Series, Outstanding Casting for a Daytime Program, and Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series for Jeff Kober as Cyrus Renault.
Meanwhile, The Kelly Clarkson Show, which wrapped for good in August, earned wins including Outstanding Daytime Talk Series. The show also won for Directing, Art Direction/Set Decoration, Hairstyling and Makeup, and Sound Mixing. Furthermore, CBS newcomer Beyond the Gates tied General Hospital with four wins overall. Tamara Tunie won Outstanding Actress and Ambyr Michelle took home the Emerging Talent prize.
In addition, General Hospital star Genie Francis received the Life Achievement Award for playing Laura Spencer on the ABC soap for five decades. “I know 50 years sounds like an awfully long time, but it doesn’t feel like that to me,” she said. “As they say, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.”
Overall, CBS led all networks with eight total wins at the ceremony. The three-hour event streamed live from the Hollywood Palladium via YouTube. The Young and the Restless, the leading nominee entering the show, ultimately took home three awards on the night.
