Former England coach: I don’t see myself as a Premier League coach

Former England national football team manager Gareth Southgate has said that he does not see himself as a manager of any Premier League club.

The 56-year-old has been out of coaching since resigning as England manager, after leading the team to the final of the 2024 European Championship, in which they lost to Spain.

Southgate, who also led England to the final of the 2020 European Championship, has not worked at club level since a three-year spell at Middlesbrough, which began in 2006.

“I don’t see a scenario where I would do that,” Southgate said on The Amol Rajan Connection podcast, when asked if he would consider a return to Premier League coaching.

“Towards the end of my time in England I stopped enjoying it. For a period, winning was what kept me going. Eventually I couldn’t enjoy winning for more than a few minutes. That’s why I hardly watched football at all,” he added, according to the BBC.

Southgate said he went to the FA Cup final to “watch his Crystal Palace win their first trophy” and added that he hasn’t been to the stadium since.

“So my desire to be involved in football has changed,” he said.

Since leaving his position as England manager, Southgate has worked in the media, and earlier this year hosted a BBC documentary in which he travelled across the UK to look at the challenges faced by young men and boys.

He also spent time as a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School in Boston.

“I’ve enjoyed the last 18 months of my life,” Southgate said.

“For 37 years, my sense of self-worth depended on whether I won or lost on Saturday. In fact, I really enjoyed having different experiences. I met politicians, people from the media industry, learned about leadership in a variety of fields, and traveled the world gaining new knowledge,” he said.

Last month, Manchester City were found guilty of most charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.

The independent commission found that the club had entered into “fictitious contracts” during that period, as well as “relying on false agreements to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs.”

Siti denied any wrongdoing and filed an appeal on October 2nd.

Southgate, speaking on this topic, stated that there will be fans who will demand that City be punished as much as possible, to be kicked out of the league, fined…

“I’ve been on football club boards, I’ve been in meetings with UEFA and FIFA and I know how complicated this all is. Essentially, I think none of this is good for football and there are no winners,” Southgate said.
