Dirty Dancing 2 Update Reveals if Movie Sequel Will Use AI to Bring Back Patrick Swayze

A new update on the Dirty Dancing sequel clarifies whether the film will use AI to recreate Patrick Swayze‘s iconic character. The upcoming movie will take place after the events of the beloved 1987 romantic drama.

Speaking at IndieWire‘s Future of Filmmaking 2026 Summit, Dirty Dancing 2 producer Nina Jacobson made it clear that the sequel won’t utilize AI to resurrect Swayze. He died of pancreatic cancer at 57 in 2009.

Jacobson said, “We won’t be bringing him back with AI.” Jennifer Grey, Swayze’s co-star in the original film, will return for the sequel. She will reprise her role as Frances “Baby” Houseman. The sequel will be set in the 1990s and feature a new generation of young characters.

How will the Dirty Dancing sequel honor Patrick Swayze?

Nina Jacobson has confirmed that the Dirty Dancing sequel will honor Patrick Swayze’s legacy in the best way possible. “That’s one of the things that you really have to focus on: how to let people mourn him in a movie,” she added.

She did not reveal how the sequel will pay tribute to him. Swayze starred as Johnny Castle opposite Jennifer Grey in the original film. Helmed by Emile Ardolino, Dirty Dancing has turned into a cult classic over the years since its initial release.

Currently, it holds a solid 73% Tomatometer score and an impressive 90% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Made on a modest $6 million budget, the film was a major box-office success. It grossed approximately $214 million worldwide.

Dirty Dancing also became popular for its everlasting soundtrack. At the 1988 Academy Awards, the film won Best Original Song for “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” The cast also included Jerry Orbach, Cynthia Rhodes, Jack Weston, and Jane Brucker.
