Deadpool & Wolverine’s Real Budget Is Way More Than Avengers: Endgame

Disney revealed the true cost of Deadpool & Wolverine, and it’s more than what Avengers: Endgame cost to make. The studio’s latest earnings report exposed the film’s staggering final budget and why it spiraled beyond expectations.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s true budget revealed

Disney’s latest earnings report revealed the total cost of Deadpool & Wolverine, as reported by Forbes. The Marvel Studios film cost a staggering $556.8 million to produce. This figure makes it one of the top ten most expensive films ever made.

The production exceeded its original budget. Disney’s financial controller Tracy Bermingham confirmed this in the earnings report. She stated that “at the year-end, the production was complete, final costs exceeded the production budget.”

The 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes significantly disrupted the shoot. The crew completed roughly half of the film before production halted in July 2023. Director Shawn Levy and his team used the downtime to develop new sequences. They added additional Wolverine variants that required new costumes and different sets.

Studios also faced massive costs maintaining productions during the strikes. They continued paying for soundstages and leased equipment that sat idle. Ongoing storage, security fees and retainers for key personnel added further expenses.

However, filming in the U.K. helped offset some costs. The British government reimburses studios up to 25.5% of their spending in the country. Disney banked $110.7 million in tax credits and reimbursements. This brought the net spending on the film down to $446.1 million.

The film earned $1.34 billion at the global box office. It became the highest-earning R-rated movie of all time before The Odyssey surpassed it. Using the industry-standard 50-50 revenue split with theaters, Disney’s estimated share totalled $670 million.

After deducting net costs, Deadpool & Wolverine generated roughly $223.9 million in box office profit. Additional revenue from home entertainment, merchandising and streaming remains unquantified. A Disney spokesperson noted that box office figures alone do not reflect the film’s overall profitability.
