Consumer coffee and kitchen appliance maker Breville this week launched the Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over, a fully automated grind-and-brew machine with a moving water spout designed to replicate manual pourover brewing.

Priced at $599.95 and bearing some functional similarities to commercial automated pourover systems from New York-based Poursteady and South Korean company iRhea, the Spiral Luxe uses a moving nozzle to execute programmed pours. Advanced recipes can vary brew ratio, temperature, number of pours and pauses.

Breville Spiral Luxe Features

The machine features stainless steel body panels and a 20-ounce glass carafe. The 40-ounce water reservoir, 200-gram grinder hopper and a conical dripper are made of Tritan plastic.

Breville is positioning the Spiral Luxe for both experienced home brewers seeking automation and single-serve users looking to move from pods or pre-ground coffee to freshly ground beans.

Breville Group Global Category Manager Yuen Chin described pourover as “the pinnacle of brewing” and said Spiral Luxe may appeal to “enthusiasts who love the ritual of pourover but no longer have the time to make it” as well as to “pod users who want to elevate their coffee game with the same level of one-touch convenience.”

The built-in grinder centers on a newly developed set of 40-millimeter flat blind burrs. Users set the grind manually by twisting the 200-gram-capacity hopper for stepless adjustments.

“The compact burr set was a deliberate call to keep the overall footprint small enough for tighter kitchens,” Chin said.

The machine calculates a target dose from the selected brew ratio, then uses a calibrated timed grind to deliver the dose. A flow meter tracks water delivery, while settings and programming are handled locally through a push-button dial beneath a 2.4-inch color display.

The machine is not Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connected, although the Breville+ app includes a complementary section with tips for dialing in brews, coffee recommendations, maintenance advice and more.

“It works alongside our app as a companion experience rather than a connected one, and that’s an area we expect to keep developing,” Chin said. “This is similar to what we offer with our non-connected espresso makers.”

The Spiral Luxe’s ThermoJet flow-through heater is another technology shared with some Breville espresso machines. Breville says the PID-controlled system is ready to brew within seconds of startup, with temperature settings of 190, 198 and 205°F.

Sydney, Australia-based Breville Group maintains a Breville USA base in Torrance, California. In the UK and Europe, the group sells its Breville-designed appliances under the Sage brand. The group owns the American grinder brand Baratza as well as Italian espresso machine maker Lelit. In 2022, Breville launched an e-commerce platform called Beanz.com for direct whole-bean coffee sales and subscriptions.

Automating the Pourover

The Spiral Luxe enters a growing category of precision-oriented automated home pourover systems. Hario’s Smart 7 was among the category’s early examples in 2016, offering programmable water temperature, volume and timing. In 2018, the first Samantha brewer launched in Taiwan through Hiroia, a joint venture involving Hario.

The wifi-connected xBloom bean-to-cup machine set a new standard upon its debut in 2022, with the Hiroia Hikaru system rolling out one year later. Earlier this year, the Cosori Juni arrived in the U.S. market as a compact, cloud-linked automated pourover machine.

Sales of the Breville Spiral Luxe launched this week through the Breville and Williams Sonoma websites.

“We’re fully committed to the Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over and automated pourover coffee,” Yuen said. “This is just the beginning in this category.”
