Ben Affleck Does Hilarious Batman Impressions, Explains His Unique Dark Knight Voice

Ben Affleck just revealed the surprising inspiration behind his Batman voice, and it wasn’t what anyone expected. The actor broke down his approach to the Dark Knight’s iconic growl on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.

How Ben Affleck found his uniquely modified Batman voice

Ben Affleck revealed he drew his Batman voice directly from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. Horowitz posted a preview clip to Instagram on Sunday, with the full episode arriving today, October 12.

Affleck explained that a high-pitched delivery simply would not work inside the cowl. “If you’re like, ‘I’m Batman,’ it just seems farcical, right?” he said. He instead turned to Miller’s aged, weathered Bruce Wayne for inspiration. “You see the Frank Miller book? I mean, the guy is really old,” Affleck said. “He’s drawn intimidatingly enough to look like Marlon Brando, but he’s, you know, quite gray haired and older and just beat to s–t.”

That grizzled portrayal shaped the vocal approach Affleck ultimately chose. “I kind of liked the idea of him just sounding literally, you know, kind of exhausted and gravelly in that sense,” he continued. He also preferred keeping the voice natural rather than relying on technology. “I like the fact that it wasn’t, because otherwise it begs the question. You got like the voice modifier in the suit or something like that,” he added.

Affleck then credited a broader acting lesson for his restraint inside the suit. He recalled how Tim Burton told Michael Keaton’s Jack Nicholson to “let the suit do the acting.” Affleck applied that philosophy himself. “As an actor, we’re apt to think that we need to do more work than we do,” he said. He compared the filmmaking process to steering a battleship. “You don’t have to paddle the ship yourself. In fact, if you do, it looks like you’re working too hard,” he said.

The interview marks Affleck’s third Batman-focused sit-down since the Skydance merger closed on October 6. Affleck also shared a memorable anecdote about Bruce Willis advising him to lower his voice during the filming of Armageddon.
